With health costs soaring, medical aids and hospitals in debt and sinking deeper, the HIV/Aids Pandemic is placing an enormous strain on South Africa’s medical resources and unemployment is rife. A new UN report, dated 21 November 2007, states that South Africa is now officially the country with the highest prevalence of HIV in the world, and while the report did not give a figure, the South African Government currently estimates about 5.5 million of the country’s 48 million population are infected.
According to a Plusnews report dated 9 January 2009, in rural areas the doctor-to-patient ratio can be as low as three doctors to 100,000 people. In the context of South Africa’s HIV/AIDS burden, this amounts to a crisis.
In Uganda, for example, healers have a vital role in supporting the conventional health service, notably when it comes to HIV/AIDS. The country has one doctor for every 18,000 people, but one healer for every 150. For many people, particularly in rural areas, the healer is the first port of call when they realise they are ill. By collaborating with healers, health workers have been able to reach far more people than they could otherwise.
Healers’ services and treatments are also more affordable. Uganda’s average national income is around £160, so conventional drugs, if they are available, are prohibitively expensive. Not only do the healers charge reasonably, they are flexible about payment.
Healers in Uganda have demonstrated that their most valuable role is as counsellors and educators. In this capacity they prove far more successful than health workers: they have the time to meet their clients’ needs, and they’re well placed to communicate in a way which is sympathetic to local culture and beliefs.
In addition to its 250,000 traditional healers, South Africa has thousands of spiritual healers from all cultural groups, all of which if properly trained can:
